Pensions and Retirement Income (presentation)

University of Alberta Presentation to undergraduate labour economics class – October 22, 2022

This presentation was entitled “Pensions and Retirement Income”. The audience were students who would not have started full time work nor have commenced any meaningful savings for retirement. There were five topics covered:

1. Pensions -Introduction and History
2. Pension landscape
   • Canada
   • Alberta
   • World
3. Retirement Savings – the # and $
4. Pension plan liabilities (i.e. benefits for members)
5. Pension plan assets (investments)

Section 3 will be of particular interest to anyone thinking of how much they should save for retirement.

The government benefit numbers have been updated to January, 2023 benefit levels.
